At the turn of the 19th century, you would know something about the average man by looking at the mug he used for shaving. Customarily, it was personalized with the insignia of his choice. Popular designs included initials, pictures reflecting the user''s occupation or hobby, and emblems of fraternal organizations. The shaving mug which inspired the Avon designer may have belonged to a railroad engineer or conductor.
